Why regular trimming matters

Regular trimming is what grows a dense, healthy cedar hedge. Cedars need a lot of sun, and as neighbouring trees fill in the canopy they can shade the hedge until sections die out. Pruning those trees to let the sun reach the hedge is just as important as trimming the hedge itself.

When to trim a cedar hedge

In spring, hedges are trimmed to remove the winter damage, including dead and broken branches. This is when a hedge grows the most. Like trees, hedges slow their growth in late summer to conserve moisture and prepare for winter, which is the time for the second trim.

Cedars do not grow back from old wood

Cedars will not generate new growth from old wood. One wrong cut can leave a black hole in the hedge that never recovers, and a cedar that is not kept trimmed can quickly grow beyond the point of recovery. Do not let more than 15 cm grow before trimming.

Will a cedar hedge grow back if it is cut too hard?

No. Cedars do not regrow from old wood, so a cut into bare wood leaves a permanent hole. That is why regular, light trims matter.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes, all waste is removed. If you would rather compost it yourself, we can leave it for you.
